Episode 340: 10 Ironmans in 10 Days and What It Taught Him About Mental Fortitude, Discipline, and Going After the Impossible: with JD Tremblay

JD completed the Epic Deca, which is 10 Ironman triathlons in 10 days across all six Hawaiian islands, and became one of three people in the world to ever finish it. He sold his house to fund it. He came home to a storage unit because he couldn't afford anywhere else to live. And he says the hardest part wasn't the race itself.
JD is a military veteran, an engineer, a certified naturopathic practitioner, and an endurance athlete who has spent his life learning how to build the kind of mental fortitude that carries you through not just extreme physical challenges but the everyday ones that most of us are quietly battling. Depression doesn't leave after you climb the mountain, he says. It's how you cope with it that changes your life.
We get into how he prepared for the Epic Deca, why discipline is something earned through structure and systems rather than something you're given, how he breaks down terrifying goals into something actually executable, and what sustainable performance really means when you're also a father who wants to be able to run around at the park with his son.
We also talk about writing his book, Hunger for More in Life, and one particular message he received from a reader that made every bit of it worth it.
IN THIS EPISODE:
What an Ironman endurance race entails, and what multiplying it by 10 across six Hawaiian islands looks like
Why discipline is a byproduct of structure, not a personality trait you either have or don't
The difference between motivation and discipline, and when to use each one
What sustainable performance actually means, and why longevity is built in the connections you make along the way
Why your goal probably isn't big enough if it doesn't scare you, and how to break it down so you can actually move
How he applied the same engineering method he used to train for the Epic Deca to writing a book
The reader message that made him understand why he wrote
