A call to write Euphoric
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine being the author of a book on alcohol-free living, but here we are.
When I was younger I loved to journal, write poetry, and short stories. I could see myself writing a fiction story one day, but a non-fiction book was never a big vision.
Pretty quickly into my alcohol-free journey, the word Euphoric came to me. My experience of life, myself, possibility, all of it was encapsulated by this beautiful word. This led to calling my business Euphoric, as well as this podcast.
It also came to me at this time to write this book, Euphoric, and as profoundly as this word came to me, chapters for the book also began filling my mind pretty quickly. In fact, it was in one day that all of the chapters came to me. It felt like a divine message telling me to write this book.
So why did I feel called to write this book?
When evaluating my relationship with alcohol, I read books and watched movies on sobriety and different people's experiences. I always felt so disconnected from them. These stories talked about drinking heavily and daily. That wasn’t me.
I wanted to write a book that positioned the alcohol-free lifestyle so differently. For me it is not about managing life or depriving myself. It is about freedom and possibility. It is about knowing yourself in a new and beautiful way. It is about the incredible health benefits of being alcohol-free and the connections you create with yourself, others, and even your spirituality.
A book for the “normal” drinker
When I was still drinking, I kept pushing my writing to the side. I struggled with creativity, focus, and discipline. Not only that, I lacked the courage to even pick up the pen to paper. I realize now that a lot of that had to do with the effects of alcohol.
A writer needs to be able to develop characters' personalities, emotions, and tap into what it means to be human. Alcohol was allowing me to numb out, so I wasn’t even accessing these feelings in my own life. I had so much shame and felt like I was lying to myself. I couldn’t possibly write about someone else.
When I became alcohol-free, I began writing again and accessing my creativity. I found myself joyfully wanting to share with others the gift that taking alcohol out of my life has been.
The majority of people identify themselves as a normal drinker, casual drinker, or social drinker. You may be one of these people. The truth is that most people actually drink above the health guidelines. Our society normalizes this and actually encourages us to drink.
When I started thinking about who this book was for, I wanted it to be for the mainstream drinker: a health-conscious, personal growth-oriented woman who's starting to ask herself, “is this really making me happy? Is this really serving me?”
