The author of Karolina’s FAVORITE book of the year is here to share her best-kept secrets to living a healthy, happy life. Even more amazing? She’s 102.

In The Well-Lived Life: A 102-Year-Old Doctor’s Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age, Dr. Gladys McGarey shares her own extraordinary stories and eternal wisdom – from her early childhood in India and chance encounter with Mahatma Gandhi to her beautiful life as a physician and mother of six children.

She began her practice when women couldn’t even own their own bank accounts (!), and in the past 60 years, she has co-founded the American Holistic Medical Association and pioneered a new way of thinking about disease and health.

Dr. Gladys McGarey doesn’t look back, only forward. At 102, she has a 10-year-plan and an eye for a healthier and more joyful future for all. In this inspiring conversation, she shares some of these secrets, along with great advice to live by, from finding your “juice” to spending your energy wildly.

IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Dr. Gladys McGarey’s background growing up in India and being raised by parents who were medical missionaries

  • Our “juice” – the life force within us, our life’s purpose – and what happens when somebody denies their juice

  • The 5 L’s – life, love, laughter, labor, and listening – and the roles of love and connection in healing

  • Getting through things vs. getting over things, and keeping the lessons of life’s hardships and letting go of the baggage

  • The importance of our dreams and manifesting, including our wishes for the future and the dreams we experience while sleeping, which she says have become clearer as she grows older

  • Spending energy “wildly” – Dr. McGarey advises us not to question when you notice something that lights you up. Just spend energy on it, because energy can’t be banked!

REFLECTION QUESTION:

What is your everyday “juice” that helps you stay oriented in your life’s purpose? What do you feel gives you energy? Do you lean into it? If not – what’s stopping you?

“Things have happened to us. They have injured our psyche. They've injured our soul – real injuries to our being. These are real things that happen. But if we are looking at that and hanging on to that, we can't move forward. It's like if I have a cut on my arm, and it scabs over. If I spend my time picking at that scab, it's never going to heal. But if I leave it alone, and just treat it as part of the healing process, there will come a time when I'll look back at my arm and I'll say, ‘Well, hello, I know what you are. You're just a scar. It doesn't hurt anymore. Now it's just part of who I was, and who I am.”  - Dr. Gladys McGarey

“Another secret that I think is really important is to pay attention to our dreams – the dreams that we have at night as well as the ones that we have in the daytime. Our dreams are a way in which we can connect our juice with our minds because our minds are critical and they can get us stuck because we are who we are. But if we can get the juice up into the where things are and some light there and some joy, it changes things.”  - Dr. Gladys McGarey
