Health requires a holistic approach

Are you ready to unlock the life of your dreams and be a force for good in the world? Here’s how Charlotte and Jonathan Mills launched their coaching and education platform, Wellness Theory.

Charlotte was raised in a culture where it wasn’t out of the ordinary to spend nights and weekends at pubs with her parents. She made the decision as a teen to not follow that same pattern and became involved in fitness. Eventually, exercising during the week and drinking on the weekends became her typical lifestyle.

Moving to the Middle East as a young adult, having everything she could ever want to live a happy life, Charlotte found herself severely struggling with her mental and emotional health. When suicidal thinking began, she realized her desperate need to reevaluate.

Moving to the UK from South Africa at the age of 11, Jonathan had a similar upbringing to Charlotte. His father worked all day and nights and weekends were spent at the pub, Jonathan alongside him. Through this upbringing, Jonathan never learned how to express emotions; instead, the model he observed was sarcasm, anger, or jokes when anything serious came up.

His entrance to fitness began as a teen. With a passion for eating well and exercise, he steered away from drinking. Unfortunately, his passion shifted to an unhealthy obsession.

At the age of 25, Jonathan began a destructive cycle of over exercising, binge drinking, and extreme anger. Something needed to change and his lightbulb moment was when he realized the extent of his unresolved emotions and their impact on his physical health. As he began to do the difficult emotional work, his chronic pain lifted.

Nutrition and exercise do matter, but what’s equally important is our emotional and mental health! When we neglect the latter, it affects all areas of our life and our being. Healing and caring for ourselves can magically unlock so much potential for living a rich and vibrant life!

What’s a small step you can take today to improve your health holistically?

Slowing down and courageously feeling emotions

It’s so important to be cognizant and intentional about not judging your feelings, choosing to be present with them, and maybe even allowing them to teach you something in that moment.

When we take time to uncover and process our emotions, we are able to tune in to ourselves in a powerful way. This work takes courage, and as Charlotte explains, that courage is the catalyst to shift you from “negative” to “positive”.

If a feeling comes up and you courageously allow yourself to look at it and ask why it’s there and where it came from, you’ll discover what might need to change. You get to be in control of what happens next.

But how do you connect with yourself and know what is happening?

A starting point for Jonathan is taking a body scan. Allow yourself to close your eyes and focus on breathing deep into your belly. This will gently calm your body. If your nervous system is in distress or arousal, it inhibits your ability to connect with your feelings.

Once you feel calm, use each intentional breath to focus on the different parts of your body, slowly moving from the top of your head down to your toes. Without judgement, observe what you feel.

As you notice what you are experiencing, both physically and emotionally, you may discover those feelings begin to diffuse and heal. The connection between mind, body, and emotions is undeniable. This simple exercise has the profound ability to help strengthen that connection!

The mind, body, and spirit connection and filling a need

You might believe that health and wellness starts with diet and exercise. In fact, it starts with a much more mindful and integrative approach to your thoughts, emotions, and to your physical body. Finding balance in caring for each area is vital to making sure that you are functioning well as a whole.

And beautiful, sustainable change happens when you create a lifestyle that you can actually maintain. Charlotte and Jonathan found that having the impact that they wanted to, would require working with individuals ready for a deep level of change, not simply wanting to have a specific body type or weight.

Wellness Theory was born out of a mission to fully integrate physical, mental, and emotional health. Lasting change is possible if all areas of your life are being addressed, and Jonathan and Charlotte seek to break the cycle of regressing by focusing on all of these.

Taking their passion for holistic health and turning it into a business was Jonathan and Charlotte's dream of fulfilling a need they observed around them. Maybe there is a need that you see that you have the unique ability to fulfill for others. As you pursue your health and holistic wellness, be open to whatever possibilities appear. You’ve got this.

“When you calm the nervous system down, you can slow all those thoughts down and you can better connect with your body, with your heart, and you can listen. You actually start to hear what your body's telling you.”  Jonathan Mills

“Courage is actually the line of which we move from ‘negative’ to ‘positive’. And it's interesting that when we actually take the courage to show ourselves how we feel, we then actually get to climb that ladder.”  Charlotte Mills
