The 4 Things I Learned at Tony Robbin's Unleash the Power Within Live

A few years ago, when I was still drinking, I didn't really know much about personal growth. Back then, I thought Tony Robbins was totally cheesy. I knew him as that guy from the movie Shallow Hal.

If you’ve heard of Tony Robbins but don’t know much about him, you might have the wrong idea, too. Perhaps you imagine him as being harsh or really strict. Or maybe too cheerlead-y. If that’s the case, I encourage you to look deeper within. I encourage you to actually look into his material and see what you can learn from him.

I stumbled onto Tony Robbins again in 2019. At that point, I had been alcohol-free for a year. I was growing a business. I was really growing myself thanks to my alcohol-free lifestyle. And I realized that, when you quit drinking, that's not the end of it. You have to continue growing yourself and growing yourself and growing yourself. It’s one of our deepest human needs.

So when I found Tony Robbins again, I started getting really invested in his programs. I started listening to his podcasts, I started reading his books, and I started attending his virtual conferences. I even got coached by a Tony Robbins coach for a long time. It made me so much happier, and it changed the things I believed about myself.

You can learn more about Tony here.

I used to have a lot of limiting beliefs about what was possible. I used to feel that I wasn’t worthy. That I wasn’t capable of very much.

Tony Robbins completely transformed some of my deepest limiting beliefs, and he just did his first live event since the pandemic that I’m so grateful to have attended!

Unleash The Power Within is four days of nonstop intensity. It is one of the wildest things I've ever seen. It’s like a rock concert with everyone jumping out of their seats and defying their limiting stories.

I want to teach you my four main takeaways from Unleash the Power Within. Remembering these four things keeps me motivated every single day. I want to share and give you the motivation to go after your dreams, too.

1. Be in a beautiful state

First, Tony encouraged us to be in a beautiful state every single day. What does that mean?

For most of us, it’s normal to feel very low energy. We feel almost on the cranky side most days. We wake up and think, Ugh. I could have slept more. Now I have to get the kids breakfast. I have to check my email and get ready for work. And it just piles up and piles up. We’re in danger of spending most days in this very low state - unless we do something about it.

How do you cultivate a beautiful state? One of the things you can do is get your energy up. That is why everyone is jumping up and down at these conferences. It’s not just for the hell of it. It’s scientifically proven to work. Tony asks audience members to get out of their seats and literally jump up and down for 40 minutes because, when you embody such a powerful state - such a state of excitability, such a state of confidence - you’re actually rewiring your brain. You learn things differently.

Tony infuses his entire conference with this energy. He encourages you to get up and dance, to just go crazy, once an hour for 10 hours straight. It’s a huge, huge workout, and it puts you in an incredible state. From there, you feel so much more powerful. When you’re in a beautiful state, you feel like you can do anything. While you may not attend a conference like this every day, you can always put on a feel-good song and dance around!

2. Our human needs are always driving us

The next big thing that I learned is how our human needs can be met in healthy and unhealthy ways. A lot of times our human needs are actually what drives us to unhealthy behaviors, even the behaviors we don't want to do anymore. Things like drinking, for example.

The idea is that we have six human needs. The six needs are certainty, uncertainty, significance, love and connection, growth, and contribution. Every human has these six needs, and we learn to meet them in good ways or bad ways.

Whenever an activity starts meeting your human needs, maybe even meeting three of them at a time or something, it is a prime activity to get addicted to. It is a prime activity to get really emotionally dependent on. Drinking comes to play with that because we misguidedly think it meets those needs.

Learn more about the 6 human needs and how it relates to drinking here.

3. Our Limiting Beliefs are a Mask for Fear

The third thing that I learned at Unleash the Power Within is that our limiting beliefs are just a mask for fear. Every human on this planet has a core fear. You might think you’re not smart enough, capable enough, or pretty enough.

You might think you aren’t skilled enough. You might think that who you are is just not enough.

And that’s only scratching the surface. The deeper fear behind that is, I’m not good enough, therefore I’m not lovable. No one will love the true me.

Everyone has these limiting beliefs.

Tony Robbins says these limiting beliefs are just a mask for fear. When you say I'm too old or I'm too young or give any reason not to follow your dreams, it feels like it’s out of your hands. You believe you have no agency to make changes.

In Unleash the Power Within, Tony Robbins introduces a really fascinating process to curb limiting beliefs. To stop them in their tracks. Tony encourages us to unleash the power of the truth, the truth of your soul.

The truth is you are not too young. You are not too old. It's not too late, you are not messed up, and you are not too poor. You’re not incapable. The truth of your soul is so much deeper than that. The truth of your soul is the most profound thing in the world.

During the conference, Tony asks us to do this exercise where you say your limiting beliefs in a really funny voice, and do it while putting your finger up your nose. In doing that, you see the ridiculousness of your limiting belief, and that frees you to unleash the truth. It’s an incredibly powerful exercise. Try it!

4. You Are Capable of Far More than You Believe

The last thing I want to share from Tony Robbins, Unleash the Power Within is that you are capable of far more than you believe.

Tony demonstrates this with something called firewalking. Basically, they burn this huge row of logs and sticks, and they burn it for almost five hours straight. This creates all these hot coals. When they’re done, they fill the parking lot with 10-foot pathways lined with red-hot coals. These coals reach up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. To put that into perspective, when we burn ourselves on something, that’s typically only 400 to 500 degrees.

So these hot coals are 2000 degrees, and Tony Robbins wants you to walk on them. He wants you to walk on them, and leave the scene completely fine and powerful.

Tony Robbins teaches you how to do it by getting in the right state. He teaches you to get into a state so powerful you feel like you can do anything. And, with the right mindset, you can. His teaching literally diminishes the ability of the coal to burn you, so you walk away unscathed. It’s such a cool experience.

So, just to recap, the four things I learned are:

  1. Get in a beautiful state every day.

  2. We have six human needs that lead us to do healthy and unhealthy behaviors. Once you learn these six human needs, you can master your motivations. You won't be driven by things you don't want to do anymore.

  3. Limiting beliefs prevent you from living your life to the fullest because you're scared. Acknowledge the ridiculousness of them, and unleash your powerful truth.

  4. You are capable of far more than you believe.

Tony Robbin’s Unleash the Power Within is a high-energy event that challenges the beliefs and limitations that hold us back. Use Tony’s four empowering insights to motivate you and take your next dynamic and intentional steps toward the life of your dreams.
