How going alcohol-free has shaped my dream life

If you told me five years ago that I’d be living my dream alcohol-free life, I would never have believed you.

At 30 years old, I was enjoying glasses of wine on the weekends while watching Netflix, sipping on cocktails socially with friends, and constantly creating rules around my lifestyle, like limiting my drinking to no more than 2 alcoholic beverages in a night, or abstaining from alcohol before 7pm. While my habits felt “normal,” it was a merry-go-round of exhaustion, guilt, and frustration. The “should I drink or shouldn’t I drink?” that ate me up inside.

After years of internal turbulence, I experimented with Dry January for the first time, taking 30 days off from alcohol. It was magical. I devoured personal development books, played board games with my husband, and felt a shift in my appreciation and gratitude. When nine occasions of drinking followed that February, I had had enough and I went back to not drinking. 

One baby step after another, I created my dream life. I fell head over heels in love with mornings (and I used to hate mornings!). I became a certified alcohol-free life coach, and even wrote this book, fulfilling a lifelong dream. I traveled to my heart's content, went to weddings, and built more authentic friendships.

I went from restless nights to the best sleep ever, kicking off my mornings with coffee and a dance party. I found myself deepening my connection to self with daily meditations and journaling. After years of feeling stuck and unfulfilled, living alcohol-free has been the fastest road to my biggest dreams.


Alcohol is the new, “unhealthy” normal

The truth is, “normal drinking” has expanded to new, unhealthy standards. We think that normal drinkers have their life together, while problem drinkers are sipping vodka from a tumbler during the day.

We don’t think twice about bottomless mimosa brunches or dinner parties with free-flowing wine. We associate an entire bottle of vodka as bad, but a few glasses of wine every night after dinner as okay.

I find it so fascinating that 52% of Americans want to drink less because deep down, they aren’t happy with how alcohol is showing up in their lives. If you’re a routine drinker, it’s likely you have a more complicated relationship with alcohol. This murky middle ground is holding you back from living your life to the fullest.

The questions you need to ask yourself are:

Does alcohol make me happy?

Is my drinking habit aligned with my values?

Does alcohol serve me in chasing my wildest dreams?
