The power of gratitude and celebrating your victories
I love December! Yes the holidays are fun, and I enjoy the spirit and joy that comes with them, but the reason I really love December is the opportunity to reflect back and get curious about what I want in the New Year.
Starting with reflection, I think there are always some universal takeaways. The first is things that you loved. Sure, every year brings its share of hardships and challenges, but in between there are so many wonderful moments of gratitude and joy.
As you think back on 2021, what are some things you cherished from the year? What experiences did you really love?
It can be so valuable to stop and ask ourselves what we are grateful for. Life goes by so fast and if we don’t hit pause, we may forget. Remembering the beauty of the past year is a great way to find appreciation and gratitude.
Another question I find so helpful is, “what did I accomplish this year?” It can be really easy to fixate on the things we didn’t do, right? Instead, take some time to be proud of how far you’ve come over the past twelve months. Honor your victories and make a list. Whether it was small or huge, all of them are important!
Your accomplishments are great reminders of your growth, and they are worth celebrating!
Leaving the past behind to create something new in 2022
Life is a rollercoaster and comes with the good, the bad, and the challenging. I find it to be so important as I reflect back on my year, to also acknowledge the difficult parts because I don’t want to carry them with me into the next year.
What in 2021 was hard for you? What did you not like? In what ways were you challenged?
When you write these things down and get them out of your head, you declutter your mind and create space for what you do want.
When I know what I didn’t like about the past year I can create goals for the future. If you know what didn’t work last year, you also know what you’ll want instead.
Maybe you were unhappy with the role of alcohol in your life this past year, so as you think about 2022, you might decide to explore an alcohol-free lifestyle instead. If you realized your mindset was really negative in 2021, set an intention to focus more on gratitude and appreciation over the next twelve months.
One thing I noticed reflecting on last year was my tendency toward guilt if I fell short of a goal or self-expectation. This coming year, I will remind myself I am doing my very best. So even when I miss the mark (which I will because I’m human!), I’m going to leave guilt behind.
Whether it’s a habit, a mindset, or getting curious about the why behind your choices, you get to decide what stays in 2021 and what to carry into the new year with you!
Cultivating your best future life starts now
After taking time to reflect back on the past year and thinking about what I want to shift moving forward, I then create my life vision. I basically give myself space to imagine my ideal future self.
I want you to close your eyes. Take a moment to imagine your future self. This version of you has everything they could ever hope for. Think about yourself 5 or 10 years from now: your ideal you. If anything were possible in the coming years, what would that look like?
Where do you live?
What do you do for fun?
What impact do you have on the world?
What goals have you achieved?
Write it all down!
This vision then becomes a framework to your goals for the coming year. When you know where you want to get to, you can create a game plan for getting there.
What would you need to accomplish in the coming year to set yourself up for your future life?
What needs to happen in 2022 to achieve that big vision?
As you answer these questions, ask yourself:
What feelings do you want to feel in 2022?
What qualities do you want to embody in the next year?
What goals do you have for 2022?
This coming year give yourself the gift of manifesting the future life you want!
“Inside of us, we are all creative, powerful, emboldened people. There is a soul within us that is here to share our gifts with the planet. And yet we have these personas, and these masks that make us feel like that's not who we really are. And sometimes you have to ask yourself, ‘How do I embody that most emboldened version of me?’ ‘How do I embody the most authentic, expressive, creative, beautiful version of me?’” Karolina Rzadkowolska
