Welcoming your most rejuvenating sleep
Have you ever finished drinking at 10:00 pm and woken up five hours later with a rush of adrenaline, anxiety, and shame? I know I’ve been there before.
When it comes to alcohol and sleep, there are many major factors at play that prevent us from getting a nourishing and restful experience. As our body is going into a fight or flight response, our sleep cycles are also impacted. REM sleep, when our brain is most active and in a dream state, is when we consolidate our memories, process our emotions, and nurture our brains.
When drinking, it’s possible that you’ll drop from 5-6 REM cycles to only one or two, keeping you in a slow wave of sleep. This is why it’s natural to feel exhausted the morning after drinking, even with 8 hours of sleep.
When you take a break from alcohol or go alcohol-free, it can take 1-4 weeks for your body to rebalance itself. Be patient with yourself. During the first two weeks, you may experience insomnia or feel on edge. This is because your incredible body is recovering and healing itself!
As your circadian rhythm begins to stabilize, there are some tips and tricks you can use to assist yourself in experiencing deep, nourishing, and restful sleep. Here are some of my favorites:
Limit your intake of caffeine to one cup in the morning, and avoid caffeine after 1 pm
Limit your food intake three hours before bed
Create an enjoyable sleep ritual you can look forward to, starting about an hour before bed
Turn off electronics and screens 1-2 hours before bed
Challenge yourself to read 100 pages of a book before bed. Who wouldn’t fall asleep after way before then?
Have a consistent bedtime and wake time to assist in creating a rhythm for your body.
If you wake up during the night, try a breathing exercise or meditation
As you step into an alcohol-free lifestyle, you will fall head over heels in love with your new and rejuvenating sleep experience.
Breaking the romance of alcohol
In the first few months of being alcohol-free, you’ll likely feel an overwhelming surge of enthusiasm and excitement about what’s possible. Over time, however, you may begin romanticizing the role alcohol used to have in your life. Maybe you’ll begin craving it again or even negotiating the idea of adding it back into your life.
The truth is, it’s not the alcohol you’re actually desiring. It’s the feelings you think alcohol offers you. You are coming up against the beliefs and thoughts you have around alcohol.
We are taught endless falsehoods about alcohol starting in our teenage years. You likely learned alcohol represents celebration or being social. Maybe you believe non-drinkers are boring? Ask yourself what beliefs about alcohol you still hold. Do you still view it as a treat? Do you think it's comforting?
Take yourself to one of the moments you’re romanticizing and walk it out in your mind. Maybe it’s drinking margaritas on a tropical beach. What would that honestly look like? You would likely get a buzz quickly and become dehydrated. You might lose interest in swimming and then feel more and more tired as the day goes on.
People often give alcohol more credit than it deserves. As you change the way you think about alcohol and get clear about the false belief systems you have, you get to shift into a new, beautiful way of seeing yourself and your life.
Finding momentum and the power of growth
Now, as you shift these narratives and the momentum wears off, the key to continuing on your alcohol-free journey is GROWTH!
So what is growth?
Growth usually involves stepping into new situations, learning new things, or overcoming challenges or hard things in your life. It is about learning and personally accomplishing more than you thought you were ever capable of. This is where the fun begins!
Personal growth may look like attending a conference, reading a book, challenging yourself to start the business you’ve always dreamed of or getting certified as a yoga instructor. As you overcome false beliefs and step into what’s possible, you will find an abundance of happiness and satisfaction.
Growth is one of our fundamental human needs, and on top of that, through growth we end up giving back to those around us, showing them what’s possible. This helps fulfill another basic human need: contribution and giving back to others.
Returning to alcohol is playing small. If you’re ready to play big, create a legacy, have an impact, and continue to explore what else is possible, now is the time!
Starting on July 26th, discover more joy, passion, and adventure as you change your relationship with alcohol and go after your biggest dreams.
